LGBTQ+ Therapy

Stop Interviewing Therapists About Who You Are

Maybe you’ve searched through profile after profile looking for someone who says they work with LGBTQ+ clients, searching for a specific code word to know they actually mean it.

Maybe you’ve seen the words “affirming” and “LGBTQIA welcome” so many times that they’ve started to lose their meaning.

Or you have sat across from a therapist who was well-intentioned but simply didn’t understand, and suddenly your first three sessions became education sessions teaching them vocabulary you have known since you were fourteen.

That is unpaid labor, and you paid for the privilege.

Start Over Without Starting From Nothing

Queer people move. For school, for work, for a partner, away from a state that stopped feeling survivable.

Every move means the person who finally knew your whole history is suddenly out of network, out of state, out of reach.

With licensure in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Florida, you can have continuity of care as life takes you across state lines.

Find a Therapist Who Already Gets It

“Affirming” gets used loosely enough to mean almost nothing. So here is the working definition in this practice.

You will not be asked to define your terms. Your identity will never be treated as the diagnosis.

Your pronouns, your relationship structure, and your family situation are context I already hold. They become the work only when you tell me they are.

Your Injury Decides Which Tool I Reach For

Identity-based harm does not live in one place, so it does not respond to one tool.

I work with three, and I choose between them based on where the injury sits.

EMDR is for the moments that have not finished happening.

The conversation with your mother. The sermon. The hallway in tenth grade. The job you didn’t get despite your qualifications.

Question the Voice, and the Pattern Underneath It

CBT is for the voice you inherited. Years of being told what you are builds a running commentary that now sounds like your own judgment.

CBT is the work of separating what you think from what you were trained to think.

Psychodynamic work is for the patterns underneath. If you learned early that being known was dangerous, that lesson did not stay in childhood. It shows up in who you choose, what you withhold, and how fast you leave.

This is the slower work, and it is the work that holds. Most people need some combination, and we decide together.

Say Something True Without Calculating the Cost

There will be a day, further along than you would like but nearer than you think, when you say something true to someone without first calculating what it will cost.

You will not notice it happening. That is the point.

Most people arrive here wanting something more ordinary than they expect. To be one person, in every room, all the time.

Ask What You Need to Ask

1. The call. Fifteen minutes, free. I answer you straight. If I am not the right fit, I will say so and point you toward someone who is.

2. The first session. We go at your pace through what brought you here. Nothing is required of you that you are not ready to say out loud.

3. The rhythm. Weekly to start, same time, so it becomes something you have rather than something you schedule.

4. The review. We check whether this is working, and I want the honest answer.
